Red Lake water levels are now higher than they have been for over 30 years.
Our area received close to 450 mm of rain during May, June and July – the 30-year average for that
period is just 240 mm. August rainfall is on track to be well above average too. Following
the wet summers of 2007 and 2008, the amount of rain received this season means that the
Red Lake watershed is totally saturated. Even though Snowshoe Dam has been wide open
since May 11th, 2009, there is more water coming into the system than the dam can release.
Additional rainfall has an immediate effect on the water level.
Residents are advised to monitor the weather forecasts and to take steps to secure shoreline
structures and values. If required, sandbags are available at the public works yard in Red
Lake. Please call 727-2597 if you require assistance.
Boaters should maintain a careful watch for floating debris. Boaters should also be aware
that boat wakes can be very damaging during these situations. Shoreline areas that are now
underwater are very susceptible to erosion. Please stay well off-shore whenever possible
and slow down to minimize your wake near shore.
